The Growth of Online Casinos in New Jersey

July has been all smiles for online casinos in New Jersey, surpassing $20m in gross revenue for the fifth month in a row and with two new online casinos now becoming fully licensed.

Figures from last month show an increase of 18.5 % year-on-year basis in online gaming. They reported a gross revenue of $20.6m, compared to $17.4m in the same period last year. Additionally, playMGM and Scores have been granted new licenses to operate.

Despite these growing figures, land-based casino revenue decreased to $247m in July, a 4% decline on year-on-year basis. Overall, New Jersey reported a total of $247m in gross revenue for the month of July. This signifies a 2.7% decrease from the $275m posted in July 2016.

Although online casinos have been a controversial issue in the US in recent years, these outlets have proven to be a great success in terms of revenue and profits. Since the introduction in the state of New Jersey in 2013, online casinos continued to boost the gaming industry. In the first half of this year, internet gaming revenue was $142m, which represents a 26.6% jump compared to the same prior year period .

The New Office of Gluck Games

Berlin and Gibraltar based, IGaming Company, Glück Games has announced the appointment of a new Chief Technology Officer.

Glück Games design and engineer casual lottery style based games for online and casino providers.

Razim has a lot of experience in the industry having co-founded GimiGames, a multiplayer skill gaming platform in Berlin and real-money Poker Company in Malta.
Following the news of his appointment, Rafael Razim said: “I have been seeking my next challenge for some time now but it didn’t take very long, after talking to Robert and meeting the team, to decide that I had found that, here, with Glück.

What they have achieved in such a short space of time and with so little resources is very impressive. The technology products and platform enhancements that we have planned will surely propel us to an even higher level and I am very excited to be part of the journey that lies ahead of us.”

Glück games will be hoping that Razim can add to the recent success of the company; after just 12 months Glück accumulated over €45m in annualised sales through operators Lottoland and Lottohelden.

Lenzhofer CEO said: “Our Berlin development team has expanded from just four people at the start to over twenty now. From a standing start, that team produced over 40 new games and our own, unique, Remote Gaming & Commerce Server (RGCS) in 2016”.

Lenzhofer added: “Throughout 2017 we are producing a further 100 games, our own game development kit and further enhancing our RGCS both in terms of new features and ever-improved levels of reliability. That level of ambition required a heavyweight CTO and, in Rafael, we now have that.”

Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic Ban Unlicensed Operators

Slovakia, Poland and the Czech Republic have decided to introduce ISP blocking to prevent unlicensed online operators from providing services to customers. Violators who are found to have circumvented the ban could face fines of up to €500,000.

These three countries have recently regulated their online markets and they have opted to rely on ISP to avoid illicit gambling activities. According to the authorities, engaging with this software would help improve their monitored iGaming environments.
However, sources suggest that ISP blocking has substantial flaws. It is still relatively easy to access already blocked gambling websites. Therefore the effectiveness of the programme in prohibiting unauthorised sites is highly questionable.

So far, Poland has been the most strictly monitored market. Since April 2017, when the country officially regulated its iGaming industry, the Ministry of Finance has placed nearly 1,000 domains in the blacklist.

In Czech Republic, IPS blocking has been operational since early July. Under the new legislation, the country was heavily criticised by the Transparency International organisation for failing to block 25 unlicensed operators. Officials, who regulated the online gambling market in January 2017, promised to take subsequent actions.

Finally, Slovakia officials said that the country’s regulated market would be best protected with IPS. According to the local media, the Ministry of Finance released at the end of July a list of 16 operators which would be blocked, including William Hill, 888 and GVC.

Cyprus Makes Bets at Gambling

Cyprus is experiencing nothing short of a tourism revolution. And, the gaming industry is leading it. Casinos have become one of the island's major providers as a part of the new tourism strategy which aims to double visitor arrivals, triple its revenue and attract over €20bn of investment by 2030.

The hospitality sector is undergoing the most comprehensive reformation since it gained independence in 1960. Following the steps of its Mediterranean sister island of Malta, Cyprus has embarked itself on an ambitious policy that targets to place gaming as the flagship of economic growth.

Last autumn, a bill was passed that would allow the construction of the first land-based casino in the island. Giant casino operators Melco and Hard Rock have won the €600m bid for this unique integrated project. The group of investors received the necessary consent earlier this summer and they have already started construction work. However, Hard Rock exited the venture and the local partner CNS Group joined efforts with the Hong Kong-listed firm.

The luxury casino, expected to be operational by 2019, will feature a main resort in the city of Limassol and fours smaller satellites in the Niconisia, Famagusta, Larnaca, and Paphos. Europe’s first integrated project will include 500 guest rooms, 100 gaming tables and at least 1,000 gaming machines

This colossal casino would turn into one of the country’s tourism key players, bringing a rejuvenation of the urban environments. Despite substantial gaming taxes and licensing revenue that casinos generate for governments, it is estimated that individually each casino visitor spend twice as much as those who do not attend casinos. This stress the great aid that such developments would bring to Cyprus’s tourism.

Regarding iGaming, the country has been slowly opening up its borders for online operators. Back in 2012, the government of Cyprus approved a framework that would allow sports betting companies operate in the Cypriot market. However, it was not until 2016 when Cyprus’ National Betting Authority (Εθνική Αρχή Στοιχημάτων) started accepting license applications.

In November 2016, online operator bet365 became the first one to be granted a license. Currently this sector reported revenue of €3,466,230 during the first three months of 2017, according to official sources.

Nevertheless the recent opening, Cyprus still holds a high-regulated market. By August 2017, over 2,500 domains belonging to unlicensed operators were added to the blacklist. In addition to the 10% tax on revenue, the National Betting Authority has not been keen on giving online permissions.

Disney & Florida Donates

Disney has doubled down its support for a proposed ballot initiative that would restrict the expansion of gambling in the state of Florida.

According to media reports, The Walt Disney Company cut a $500,000 check in favour of the committee backing the amendment ‘Voters in Charge’. The mass media and entertainment conglomerate has previously showed its support for the cause by donating $250,000 earlier this year. Since April, Disney has contributed over $1m which accounts for over 80% of the total donations.

If the initiative makes it onto the 2018 general election ballot and passes, the bill would force any future gambling expansions to be decided by Florida voters. Last Friday, the political committee had collected over 150,000 valid signatures.

Anti-gambling expansion group No Casinos Inc . has also been supporting this proposal. The group affirms that a greater amount of casinos would mean an increase in the gambling addiction as well as a shutdown of local businesses.

eSports Battle

The astonishing growth of eSports has been widely discussed and even more widely hyped amongst established operators and start-ups alike.

This year’s Pitch ICE, the start-up competition held at the annual ICE expo, highlighted the ever-increasing popularisation of eSports, featuring numerous start-ups who are looking to tap into this potential gold-mine.

These bright-eyed self-starters have developed specialised platforms specifically designed for an eSports-betting Millennial audience. Similarly, larger operators have started to offer odds on eSports tournaments in an attempt to cash in and catch the widely coveted attention of the largest generation yet, creating an $892.4m industry in 2016. With both industry goliaths and flourishing start-ups eager to profit from this market, who will the eSports punters eventually flock to, and why?

One of the first things to consider is if these companies can apply the conventional models of traditional sports betting to the eSports betting market, or whether there are other variables that must be considered.

Tim Hurks, Founder and CEO at ArcaneBet.com, states: “In my opinion there is no huge difference between eSports betting and betting on regular sports. The eSports tournaments themselves are very competitive and have a live crowd atmosphere just like any other sport. The betting scene evolving around it is nothing more than a natural phenomenon.”

However, other industry experts have suggested that there is a world of difference between these two markets that must be taken seriously by operators looking to adopt eSports in their offerings. This first is, of course, the target demographic; it is widely accepted that Millennials take centre stage in the eSports market, and operators need to know how to cater for this unique generation of future bettors.

“In my opinion, traditional sports betting has flourished rather slowly, and only because operators have felt the need to cater for the wants and needs of Millennials,” says Suraj Gosai, Co-founder of Blinkpool.com. “Right from the very beginning, eSports has been tailored to this coveted demographic; Millennials are used to products with high-quality graphics, and which allow them to multitask and handle a lot of information at one time. All the data gathered about this demographic would indicate that they would like gambling, yet the products they are offered do not spark their interest. I believe eSports offers the industry a chance to innovate on the prolific gambling and viewing experience together.”

Mark McGuinness, eGaming Futurology Consultant at Mainstream Marketing and Communications, further argues that this particular form of sports is much more relatable to the everyday lives and interests of the younger generations: “eSports players typify the true Millennial generation in that they have grown up and are fully au fait with digital technology and media. Their consumption and media patterns are different; they understand Bitcoin, social media, the decentralised internet and so forth.”

While this form of gaming is already popular with this sought-after group, James Watson, Head of eSports at Betradar, suggests that the consumer demands of this generation will not be particularly easy to appease: “They are typically a younger demographic, perhaps not particularly accustomed to betting, and react quite unfavourably to poor user experiences. This means that the most successful eSports betting operators to date are those who have tapped into the mindset of the end-user, creating easy to navigate and simple to understand offers that resonate with them and their lifestyles.”

Indeed, Hurkss also believes that speaking the language of Millennials is no easy business, particularly in terms of marketing: “ESports is a relatively young and currently fast developing industry. It is a new market with new users compared to other sports. Partly because it’s main audience can only be found online, it is a challenge finding successful ways of approaching and connecting to this audience. It is still difficult to estimate the true potential and value of both the audience as well as channels such as YouTube and Twitch. With a lot going on in an immature market these aspects can either be under-valued or over-valued, which can have a big impact (both negative and positive) on the profitability of eSports betting.”

McGuinness points out that amongst eSports consumers, you’ll find “huge loyalty, tribal behaviour and engagement with one particular video franchise in the value chain” and therefore the opportunities for betting crossover on eSports can often be scarce when compared to traditional sports betting.

Another significant difference between eSports and the traditional market is the nature of the games themselves – particularly their tendency to be continuously updated and reworked by gaming publishers. While Michael Doyle, Chief Marketing Officer at PVP.ME, believes that the “changes in mechanics keep the games engaging and extend their eSports ‘lifetime’”, these changes can make the production of odds for eSports tournaments especially tricky.

This is further complicated by the vast amount of factors to consider when generating odds on games such as DOTA II, which has approximately 500 in-game variables – not to mention the competencies of the teams themselves.

“The monthly revisions of rules and mechanics in the game have a major impact on performance and results. In comparison to traditional sports, eSports is a very dynamic and fast-developing sector dedicated to answering the audience’s requirements for thrills, entertainment and a superb betting experience,” notes Mario Ovcharov, Chief Marketing Officer at UltraPlay. “Teams need to be up-to-date with the current environment. Teams that quickly adapt will possess more advantages in the game and be more successful. That’s why it’s really difficult to create odds in eSports and for betting players to follow the trends of gaming performance of all eSports teams.”

“The subject matter is several magnitudes more complicated than the majority of more traditional sports; try showing a Data II stream to an eSports newcomer, and they’ll walk away with a very blank expression,” adds Watson. “This is down to the sheer amount of micro-events and activities taking place every minute. This has several knock on effects when it comes to effectively creating mathematical models and dealing with the vast quantities of live data during a match.”

ESports also suffers from a lack of regulation, which also has an effect on the betting market; consumers are discouraged to bet on matches which may have been fixed with an operator who is not complying to any formal regulatory standards.

Fortunately, many countries have made huge strides in terms of regulating the eSports betting market. “For most jurisdictions, including the UK, eSports betting is already regulated and accepted just as any other sport,” explains Watson. “Indeed, there are now almost 100 licensed bookmakers globally offering eSports betting options. There are some exceptions to this rule; for example Italy and France, where the regulation process is a bit more complex, although these territories are also making remarkable progress.

“The more complicated story surrounds skinbetting and other more informal betting mechanisms. The UK Gambling Commission has taken a firm stance on such activities in recent weeks, announcing that any gambling operator dealing in these pseudo-currencies will require a license. This is a trend that will most likely continue in some of the more heavily regulated markets.

However, the regulation of eSports tournaments themselves remain a huge problem for this market, as Gosai explains: “A formal regulatory body for eSports needs to be put in place and there needs to be an improvement in tournament standards, including a base threshold of what is expected and permitted. One of the greatest threats to the market is the increase of match-fixing especially if the gambling market grows at a faster pace than the professional scene. Players themselves need to be protected, assured they are competing on a level playing field and being paid enough so that financial incentive to fix a match is diminished.”

McGuinness notes that “operators need accurate data in order to offer odds on eSports events”; so if the lack of regulation continues, operators may be put off by this market due to the complications of predicting odds for an unregulated sport. This will in turn limit the competition between operators, ultimately stunting or decelerating the growth of the betting market itself. However, Ovcharov warns that regulators will need to consider “how to improve and enrich eSports tournaments rather than restrict and encapsulate the market sphere”.

Go to See New South Korean Casino

Korean news outlet Chosun Ibo has reported that the new Paradise City casino complex has attracted over 300,000 people through its doors in its opening months.

The development is South Korea's largest casino complex, and was only opened on 20 April 2017. It has 711 rooms and operates a foreigner’s only casino floor policy due to Korean regulations.

The complex is looking to expand in the future by opening a spa and mall to help further appeal to Korean families, a facility which should be operational by early 2018. The financial potential of the complex and its appeal can be better evaluated then, however, the large amount of visitors to the incomplete facility is a great sign of things to come.

A Paradise City spokesman said on Thursday: “Some 310,000 people had visited the complex, which opened on April 20. Since the first part opened, about 90% of hotel rooms have been occupied," said Kye Jung-hyun of Paradise City. "The second part is 55% finished. Once it's complete, the complex will emerge as a leading tourist attraction in Northeast Asia."
